Carnival in Venice and the
ballo del doge...
Close your eyes for a moment… imagine… an
enchanted evening in Venice as you arrive at a magnificent palace on the Grand
Canal; the magic light of a thousand candles dances to baroque melodies as a
dazzling masquerade floats to the music of a string quartet; costumed actors
bring the court to life on a night full of intriguing events and surprises.
Imagine… the Doge’s Masked Ball at the Palazzo Pisani Moretta - the highlight of
your visit to the Venice Carnival. This special Flights of Fantasy visit to
Venice includes two nights at the five-star Gritti Palace Hotel on the Grand
Canal, a welcome reception and splendid dinner at the Gran Caffe Ristorante
Quadri in St Mark’s Square, a walking tour of the city, and the Ballo del Doge
at the Palazzo Pisani Moretta. And to fly you there and back? Your Legacy
Private Jet!
Venice at carnival time
As if Venice did not have enough visual
attractions, the city’s nightlife is, for ten days, transformed into a
spectacular pageant that encompasses palaces, hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars,
squares and street corners alike. Nearly everyone wears at least a mask - many
don everything from a long hooded cloak to the most extravagant and bizarre
costume. Visitors are encouraged to take part and one can buy a disguise from
any number of street stalls and shops.
There is continuous entertainment - from the
Ball itself to costume parades, concerts in St Mark’s Square and many other
places, dances, shows, exhibitions and so much more. All the time, gondolas
glide the canals carrying costumed revellers here, there and everywhere in a
glorious carnival atmosphere.
Venice...
enice- La Serenissima – is a fantasy itself
with its ornate palaces and bridges floating on a spider’s web network of
canals. The city has had a magnetic appeal to visitors for centuries and, during
its ‘Golden Age’, was world-famous for the glories of its architecture, art and
music. Subsequently it attracted the more frivolous visitor with its carnivals
and masked balls and, in the 19th century it became a centre for romantics such
as Byron, Browning and Wagner.
Today, Venice is a museum to all of those
times. It is captivating and incredible. St Mark’s Square with its famous Bell
Tower is probably the most beautiful square in the world and St. Mark’s Basilica
is a stunning building which dates from the 9th century.
It is impossible to describe its beauty. The
magnificent Doge’s Palace remains the grandest of all in Venice. It, too, has
treasures to dazzle the visitor including Tintoretto’s ‘The Paradise’ - the
largest oil painting on Earth.
The Rialto, one of the city’s most familiar
landmarks, is lined with a double row of shops and has spanned the Grand Canal
for 400 years. The Grand Canal is the High Street of Venice, winding proudly
through the city for two miles. It is fascinatingly beautiful with some 200
palaces, built between the 12th and 18th centuries, on its banks.
Hotel Gritti Palace...
The sixteenth century palace of the Doge
Andrea Gritti is one of the world's truly celebrated hotels and has welcomed
Kings and Queens, Prime Ministers and Presidents, writers, actors and film
stars. The hotel’s distinguished elegance and efficient, yet discreet, service
reflects the high standards demanded by its guests and is the perfect choice for
this Flight of Fantasy, with its enviable position on the Grand Canal just a few
steps from St Mark’s Square. Exquisite attention to detail and a prestigious
atmosphere are the hallmarks of a stay at the Gritti Palace and luxury reigns
supreme - in the public areas, the ‘Club del Doge’ restaurant, the Bar Longhi
and in your beautifully appointed bedroom.
The Gran Caffe Ristorante Quadri
The restaurant describes itself as ‘a window
on to the finest drawing room in the World’ - St Mark’s Square - and over the
centuries its windows and mirrors have reflected celebrated figures such as
Dumas, Byron, Wagner, Proust and Chaplin. Enjoy these fabulous surroundings
during our welcome cocktail reception and dinner.
Ballo del doge at the Palazzo Pisani
Moretta...
This 15th century palace is situated on the
Grand Canal about half way between the Hotel Gritti Palace and the Rialto. It
was built in Gothic floral style and underwent various refurbishments until the
18th century when the last major works were completed that gave the palace its
present day appearance.
The interior of the palace is a feast of
wonderfully elaborate Baroque decoration - the work of outstanding Venetian
artists of the 18th century. In recent times, restoration, the re-acquisition of
its art collection and recovery of its antique furniture has recaptured the
splendour that in previous times attracted the likes of Tsar Paul of Russia,
Josephine Bonaparte and Joseph II, the Austrian Emperor.
The Ballo del Doge begins at 9pm with a Gala
Banquet in the Grand Ballroom. Throughout the evening you will be entertained by
operatic, dance, and theatrical performances. It is obligatory to wear a costume
and a mask at the Ball - you may take your own, buy your own in Venice, or we
will provide details of costume hire.
